I have a fix for the timeouts that works quite well here.  I read the
Dynamic-IP hacks HOWTO, and none of those solutions was as satisfying.
If anyone's interested, I'd be willing to write up what I did, as soon
as I have the time, and I can figure it out :>

The caveat being that it's entirely possible that what I did was
really stupid, and I just don't know it, yet...
