I agree that we can't hold of making a release because there's a new major
version of the Y program arriving RSN.
But I doubt it's an either/or type of situation. Once we're in the freeze
period, we'll have "frozen" and a new "unstable", which will quickly contain
the new versions (lynx 2.8, gcc 2.8, ncurses 4 etc.). Isn't it an option to
include on the official CD images a selection of the new "unstable" at
release time, containing these major upgrades, space permitting? Of course,
such a selection should be clearly marked with a note like
The software in this section is not a part of Debian 2.0. It was
released too recently to undergo the quality assurance procedure
the Debian project uses to test packages for release. However,
the Debian project wishes to make these new versions available
to you. We recommend that you check [update page / post-release
notes & hints page] before installing this software."
