I still wonder over that one... FHS 2.0 said /opt is being used on
Solaris (for example) but it doesn't go into specifics.
Now what if Sun installs anything into /opt? Do they? If so, why
can't we?
I do feel stubbornly sticking to "we don't use /opt, every"
is... well, stubborn, and too strict. Big packages (I mean *HUGE*)
could, IMHO, also go into /opt.
Note that the FHS does not say anything about distributions and
/opt... it only says "add-on packages". Some people consider stuff
in Extra and Optional (/OPTional?) as add-on to the core distribution.
Just refer to the KDE/Qt debate.
