Well, to reply to myself with the hope it can be useful to some other
people: the serial module has a bug for which a workaround is enabled
in pcmcia-cs 3.1.14-1.  So if you recompile your modules from
	pcmcia-source 3.1.14-1
to avoid the "undefined symbols", also compile the utilities:
	cd /usr/src/modules/pcmcia-cs
	./debian/rules binary-cs
	dpkg -i ../pcmcia-cs_3.1.14-1_i386.deb
