Debian-NP: 3, 2, 1. Go!

by RICCARDO BAGNATO

Even such an hot summer did not prevent 130 users to gather from all around
the world to the new Debian project: Debian-NP
<http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-nonprofit>, where NP stands for Non
Profit. Main achievement: providing non profit sector a brand new operative
system.

Some other goals are likely to be added to the project agenda, said Mako
Hill, Debian-NP project leader, among Indymedia founders, SPI
<http://www.spi-inc.org> board of directors member and off course senior
Debian developper: "We would like to create a new easy-to-install-and-manage
operative system, where non profit organizations can find useful and
specific features dedicated to their activities"

Moreover the announcement of a new non profit free software project by
Debian community has attracted many other similar projects like NOSI,
Nonprofit Open Source Initiative <http://www.nosi.net>, ParTecs
<http://www.partecs.com>, or InfoCentral <http://www.infocentral.org>, and
Calendula project <http://savannah.gnu.org/projects/calendula>, both last
two projects focused on fund raising software developpment

The ralationship between non profit sector and free software world is no
news though. Last year, for instance, Michigan University organized an
important seminar called "Open Source Software And The Non-Profit Sector".
Complete report on the seminar can be found at Slashdot page:
<http://slashdot.org/articles/00/08/23/1449222.shtml>. And so did the
O'Reilly Network on the article "Non-Profit Corporations in Open Source on
the Rise" <http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/wlg/2959>.
