I don't really know. I put both 16MB SIMM modules in the 1st & 4th slots which
are in fact the first bank ;)) I didn't try other place.

I heard that 8MB & 32MB may work but, as I don't have such modules handy, I
can't try them. However I tried 1MB 33 bits I got for free but they are not
really useful to extend the memory since the number of banks in the
SparcClassic is rather short ;-)

Are you sure you are using the right type of memory, i.e. fast page mode, 60ns,
36 bits? Not all non-EDO DRAM are FPM. There are nibble mode, static row, ...
I don't remember of a very slow memory test. I can only tell you about the
system I used some time ago, before the 36 bits SIMMs were moved from my
classic to my P90 box. I need more memory here than in my sparc, so I
downgraded the latter to 24MB only (6x 4MB, 33bits SIMMs) and upgraded the P90
up to 64MB.
Anyway, they used to run with no trouble at all in the past as I compiled many
kernels & Debian packages on my sparc.

Regards.
