I have looked over your log, and it appears that your system was in an inconsistent state *before* the upgrade. libnewt0.52 is a dependency of whiptail in both lenny and squeeze, and there is no mention in your apt log of the libnewt0.52 package being removed (or even upgraded) prior to this failure.
