Well, I can assure you that _this_ is not a symptom of bad RAM :-) .

Look under /usr/lib/locale and see what is installed. Not much.
I might guess that's the problem.

I have perl-5.002-7 and libc5 version 5.2.18-2 . If I set LC_CTYPE to
iso_8859_1 as I _guess_ you did, I see the same report. If I unset it,
there is no complaint. I have not had time to initiate myself into
locales and thus don't understand why that particular name would be
the one you set.
