Has anyone done a java installation on debian?

Getting java-linux installed is a little tricky (you need particular
libc and corresponding bug-fixed make, as well as reasonable versions
of ld.so, among other things.) Seems that it would be a good candidate
for a debian package just because of the dependency handling...

Has anyone tried this? I'm running a debian/unstable-1.1 system, so it
has the latest debian ELF stuff...

I'm mostly hoping to avoid redoing work that's already been
done. (apparently the java-linux port ships as rpm's as well as tar
files, not that that helps us any :-)
