Well, now, still for reasons I cannot determine, my ppp is working again. I am
at a loss.

I changed nothing to make it stop working -- I simply rebooted and everything
stopped working. 

I have changed nothing to make it start working either (not even reboot) -- it
simply started working again this evening.
