Package: apt-file Version: 3.2.2 Severity: wishlist Dear Maintainer, I don't like (apt's) PDiff feature, so I disable it everywhere. However, on the few machines/chroots where I like to install apt-file, /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/50apt-file.conf is installed, which set's 'PDiffs "true";', overwriting my configuration choice from /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/$mine. Could you please ship a /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/50apt-file.conf by default, which doesn't do that? Thanks for maintaining apt-file! -- tschau, Holger ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- holger@(debian|reproducible-builds|layer-acht).org PGP fingerprint: B8BF 5413 7B09 D35C F026 FE9D 091A B856 069A AA1CAttachment: signature.asc

We made the choice to do it like this, because, while disabling PDiffs can have some advantages for a small set of users on Packages and Sources files, the advantages for Contents files affect an even much smaller set of users. Given that a lot of users are using Pdiff false to due to historic performance issues, the choice was made to default Contents files to enabled, even if users manually disabled Pdiffs by default; as disabling Pdiffs for Contents files produces terrible results in almost all cases - because they are huge files. I'm not sure there are connections and machines where pdiffs for Contents files are slower than fresh Contents files. Having to download the Contents file, and decompress it takes a lot of time, compared to decompressing the lz4 stored local file, downloading patches and patching it. You are free to override the options apt-file sets for those targets, and I suggest you do so if you believe that Pdiffs are worse for you. -- debian developer - deb.li/jak | jak-linux.org - free software dev ubuntu core developer i speak de, enAttachment: signature.asc
