I was told that 'unpack' followed by 'configure' was equivalent to
'install'. If this isn't true then what's the difference? I get the same
end results if I do one as I do when I do the other. In any case, if true,
then an 'unpack' followed by 'configure' for each package would suffice. 

I have a vague memory of someone telling me that they preferred to
unpack/configure rather than install. Is there really anything more to
this than personal preference?
