Actually, as I remember it, "grep" relates to an "ed" command: 
g/re/p - globally find regular expression "re" and print it. 
"grep" is just a way to do that without invoking "ed".

Recently, I saw UNIX referred to as "a grabbag of tools with in-joke
names" (as a reason why "pointy-haired people" don't like it.) The in-joke
part is one of the great things about UNIX: a lot of the terms refer to
other terms.
