    Or better yet, can it handle a partition table which isn't quite what it
expects?

    Nope. Meanwhile fdisk works just fine even though it does bitch about
it. Odd part is, this partition table was made with fdisk.

root@teleute:~# fdisk
Using /dev/sda as default device!

Command (m for help): p

Disk /dev/sda: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 149 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes

   Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1   *         1       32   257023+  83  Linux native
Partition 1 has different physical/logical endings:
     phys=(250, 63, 32) logical=(31, 254, 31)
Partition 1 does not end on cylinder boundary:
     phys=(250, 63, 32) should be (250, 254, 63)
/dev/sda2            32      150   941056    5  Extended
Partition 2 has different physical/logical beginnings (non-Linux?):
     phys=(251, 0, 1) logical=(31, 254, 32)
Partition 2 has different physical/logical endings:
     phys=(145, 63, 32) logical=(149, 39, 18)
Partition 2 does not end on cylinder boundary:
     phys=(145, 63, 32) should be (145, 254, 63)
/dev/sda5            32       39    52223+  83  Linux native
/dev/sda6            77       97   154623+  83  Linux native
/dev/sda7            97      148   410623+  83  Linux native
/dev/sda8           148      150    14335+  82  Linux swap
/dev/sda9            39       77   313261   83  Linux native

Command (m for help):

    Until cfdisk can do more than panic and quite I say leave fdisk in
there. It may be old, crusty and unsupported, but at least it works.
