That sounds like a reasonable compromise, but there's no need for us to
put stuff in to /opt, since we have a good package manager and can remove
things even when the binaries are mixed in with every other binary on
the system.

On a Solaris system I have access to:
[12:17pm] moffatt@yallara[/opt] ls
CTX.UIS SUNWits SUNWleo SUNWrtvc SUNWspro SUNWtcx lotus

[12:19pm] moffatt@yallara[/opt] echo $PATH
/home/m/moffatt/bin:/usr/local/pkg/jdk1.2/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/bin/X11:/usr/local/pkg/teTeX/bin:/usr/local/pkg/nmh/bin:/usr/local/pkg/netpbm:/usr/bin:/opt/SUNWspro/bin:/usr/ccs/bin:/usr/ucb:/usr/openwin/bin:/usr/local/pkg/oracle/product/8.0.3/bin:/usr/local/pkg/oracle/product/8.0.3/ows/3.0/bin:/usr/local/pkg/odi/os5.0.3/sunpro/bin:/usr/local/pkg/odi/osi2.2/bin:/usr/local/pkg/gnat/bin:/usr/local/pkg/iona/OrbixMT_2.3c/bin:/usr/local/bin:/home/b/blyall/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/local/pkg/rational/releases/rose.4.0.16b/bin

urk.
