On the contrary, much of that rift seems to have been repaired.  RMS
contributes regularly to Debian forums.  Many of his radical ideas are 
accepted by Debian.  True, Debian doesn't automatically agree
with everything which GNU says, but the mutual respect has increased.

One of the issues which caused the Debian/GNU split, ready
distribution through Debian tools of the source as well as the
binaries, has effectively been solved through recent additions to
apt-get.  We still don't distribute our packages compiled with the
"-g" flag, but it is easier for individual users to do this now.

I'll bet that if Debian develops a well-thought plan to make the
policy doable for GNU, then GNU will make it so.
