I like your work & your review of free vs non-free.
I agree steamcmd is a bit scary: binary program that downloads more binary code.
As it's being referenced upstream I don't want to break the current API
... still I think it could be also called in a more "containerized" way, at least from game-data-packager.
I have no experience yet, but I'll give a try.
