syslogd will stop sending things to a named pipe if the pipe fills up.
I believe the pipe size under Linux to be 8k.  If you start xconsole up
soon enough after booting, you won't have a problem.

Since /dev/console is a symbolic link, its permissions and owners are
irrelevant.  The permissions and owner of /dev/tty0, what /dev/console
points to, are what determine access.
