"Hard Disk Controller Error" often means that you've swapped the cable ends. (Even though they're usually unkeyed, IDE cables are not symmetric, sigh.) Or did you leave it cabled in the same position that you had it in as a slave? Can you get it up as a slave if you try again? Western Digital has a web page -- check yahoo under computers/disk drives or something like that. (yahoo still beats altavista for structured searches...)
